Sustainably Grown, Ethically Harvested Cocoa

Sustainably Grown, Ethically Harvested Cocoa

Every piece of chocolate has a remote starting point, long before it reaches our kitchen.

It starts on cacao farms in the tropics, where ripe pods are harvested by hand and the beans inside are carefully fermented and dried to bring out the flavours that make chocolates unique. From there, those beans begin their journey through roasting, refining and chocolate making, eventually becoming the beautiful couverture we use at Bracegirdle’s.

It is a process shaped by patience, skill and care. But like many good things, it comes with a backstory.

The global cocoa industry faces some very real challenges. Many cocoa farmers work at small scale and under difficult conditions, with low incomes and increasing pressure from climate, disease and environmental change. There are also ongoing concerns across the industry around child labour risk, deforestation and long-term sustainability.

These are not issues we think should be glossed over.

For us, choosing chocolate is about more than just flavour, though flavour matters very much. It is also about where that chocolate comes from, and whether the people behind it are being supported in meaningful ways.

That is one of the reasons we choose to work with Callebaut for our Belgian chocolate. Through its partnership with the Cocoa Horizons Foundation, Callebaut contributes to programmes that support cocoa-growing communities, help strengthen farmer livelihoods, encourage more sustainable farming practices and improve traceability through the supply chain.

We know that sustainability isn’t something any business can claim to have ‘solved’. It’s always an ongoing project, and demands honesty as much as effort. But we do believe it matters to choose suppliers who are taking that responsibility seriously and investing in a better future for our planet.

At Bracegirdle’s, that ethos sits naturally alongside everything else we value – craftsmanship, quality, care and a genuine passion for chocolate.
So, when we make our chocolates, we do so with the comfort of knowing there is careful consideration and thoughtfulness behind the ingredients that we choose, and a wider effort to support a more responsible cocoa industry.

Because good chocolate should feel good in every sense.
